More info, in case somebody is interested: Same exim version, but
differend GNUTLS libs:

    everything works fine with libgnutls.so.13
    broken(?) with libgnutls.so.26

Sidenote: I always used debian packages (etch/stable (4.63), etch-backports 
(4.69), lenny (4.69))
