The canonical book can be found at http://regex.info/. And google should be able to locate a beginners tutorial that you will like. This isn't quite the right list for teaching how to use regexps. But, "no". '[a]' means basically the same thing as just 'a'. '[a][d][s][l]' means the same as 'adsl'.
