Thanks for all the comments and information about this.  The mystery is 
solved (at least as far as I care to pursue it at this time).  The 
tampering was done by his Avast anti-virus software.  Why it does things 
this particular way is still a mystery.  I tried to dope it out via 
Avast's knowledge base, but I ran out of energy before figuring it out.
