I have, very rarely, seen an issue where the callout target delayed a response 
for longer than the original sender's smtp timeout. Not in the past few years, 
though.

However, that would probably mean that a site would, theoretically, have 
trouble sending mail to itself. Either its tarpitting policy is unfeasibly 
harsh, or its persistence in the SMTP phase is very optimistically small.
