Thanks for the suggestion. I'm not entirely sure that would work. Exim
and dovecot are on the same server. Dovecot LDA has no problem passing
emails to *my* Exim instance. The problems come up when my Exim is
trying to pass the email to my provider's SMTP server in smart relay
mode. I *need* to authenticate as a client at that step - it is not up
to me - my provider's SMTP will only accept authenticated connections on
SMTP.
