Sorry, my fault. You're right. The host generating the Message-ID Header does
not log it as "id=...", only as $exim_message_id which is the unique part of
the generated Message-ID:. Usually this is sufficient to track an email.

Agreed.
In fifteen years as postmaster on an exim domain I've always found the
(internal) message id immediately after the date on each log line sufficient.

It is only through this thread that I've discovered that the message id from the previous MTA is also available in the <= line.
