Preferably you need to have the backup know what the legitimate
email accounts are - both local-part and domain - so that it
can reject bad ones at SMTP time. Otherwise it becomes a source

Getting that knowlege depends on your existing setup.

Are either of these useful for an MX backup ?
I have to admit most of the people I know have an exim server in front of
their exchange system rather than as an MX backup.
