The Debian configurator asked for a domain name or IP address for the
smarthost. I gave IP address 158.69.159.172. Later a comment in the
debian-user list motivated reverting to the domain name. Will see
the result when I test again.

there, applied "chmod 640 /etc/exim4/passwd.client".
