Hello Andrew,

I understand that is not your point, but I am very sure this would come
up so I will say it, hoping to stop sidetracking the discussion from a
the real issue you reported:

  It probably was never possible to build exim with -Werror.

So let's ignore the -Werror and look at the actual warning.
