Hello everyone,
I've got a question regarding how best to warm up a new server's IP when one
has a full email workload to start with.
I've seen articles about how to warm up a new server/IP but the scenario they
have is a new marketing/comms campaign where you can start from zero and
gradually build up. But what about the situation where one has a full email
workload of emails (thousands) to deal with, where you do not have the luxury
of starting
from zero/minimal numbers of emails and gradually building the volume up ?
What would your advice be in general terms in how to transition email from one
server to a new server ? Also below I set out what i've tried using Exim in my
'lab' - a set of vms running Exim on my desktop machine.
To warm up the IP of a new relay the idea below is to pick the new relay
depending on whether the condition in the warmupnewrelay router tests
true. Otherwise control falls through to the current/production router, which
at the start will handle all the email/very nearly all of the email.
As the IP of the new relay warms up the condition setting in the warmupnewrelay
router gets changed so the condition tests true more often , eg change the
{40}
to
{80}
in the
condition=...
option of the warmnewrelay router to double the number of outgoing email that
gets sent via the warmuprelay router, so here it sends 4% of the emails via the
new
IP instead of 2% so over time the distribution of the emails gradually
transfers to
the new server/new IP.
#this router sends email via the new IP, the IP address to 'warm' up.
warmupnewrelay:
driver = manualroute
domains = ! +local_domains
transport = remote_smtp
condition = ${if < {${randint:1000}} {40}}
route_data = <new relay host>
ignore_target_hosts = <; 0.0.0.0 ; 127.0.0.0/8 ; ::1
no_more
#the below router is for established IP
dnslookup:
driver=dnslookup
domains !=+local_domains
transport=remote_smtp
...
Does this look like a reasonable approach ?
I'd be grateful for any feedback / advice on the best way to do this.
Many Thanks,
Kind Regards,
Alex
