Hi everyone!
I wanted to send out a special announcement about the Second Annual
American Film Festival of Moscow, which will be taking place next week!
September 18-23rd at the Formula Kino Evropa cinemas in the new
Evropeisky Shopping Center by Kievsky. (3rd floor.)
The festival features recent releases, Indie films, Hollywood
Classics, incredible documentaries, family films and more.
For full disclosure, I am the programmer of the documentary program
but these are truly incredible films that you will never get another
chance to see in Moscow. We also have ALL of the documentary
directors coming, ready to engage in debates and discussions.
Here is a link to the festival website (it is all in Russian and
parts are in English)

And here is a link to the special documentary program. You can also
see some of the films' trailers there.

Our extra special event is a retrospective of special guests: DA
Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus. I'll put a short bit with more
information about the documentaries below, and I hope you don't mind
me plugging the festival, but the films are worth it! Hope you can
come! Spread the word!
The retrospective of the work of DA Pennebaker & Chris Hegedus
includes the legendary "Don’t Look Back" a film that follows Bob
Dylan during his 1965 tour through England (often considered the most
important rock and roll film, and an unparalleled view of the young
Dylan) the Oscar-nominated film, "The War Room", which documents the
behind the scenes journey of Bill Clinton’s race for the White House
in 1992. "Rockaby", about a rare play that Samuel Beckett wrote
specifically for Pennebaker & Hegedus, "Jimi Plays Monterey",
featuring Jimi Hendrix's electrifying performance that began his
career in the US, and the film "Startup.сom", an intimate view into
the internet boom and two friends who try to ride the wave to
success. But one of the most interesting events for us is the
possibility to present Pennebaker’s 1959 film - "Opening in Moscow",
about the American Exhibition held that year. Soviet citizens
thronged Sokolniki to have their first ever taste of Pepsi, their
first glimpse of an American kitchen, to learn what current American
fashions were in 1959, to maybe even sneak out a forbidden
book. . . .The Exhibition was also the backdrop of the famous
Krushchev-Nixon "kitchen debate." A great deal has changed since
then, and now, we are really glad we have the chance to have DA
Pennebaker here to present this film in person in Moscow for the
very first time- almost 60 years after he filmed it.
The independent documentary program is filled with films that have
been gathering audiences in packed cinemas in the US but might never
make it to Russian audiences outside of our festival. It is an
incredible opportunity to see: "Garbage Warrior" – about a visionary
architect who builds self-sustainable houses out of beer cans, "51
Birch Street" – an intimate portrayal of a family story that
questions if one can know too much about our parent’s lives, "The
Devil Came on Horseback" – a gripping tale of one man’s experience
in Darfur, Sudan and his mission to make a difference, and
"Helvetica" – a film that celebrated the ubiquitous font and a
special treat for graphic designers all over the world. These films
also portray slices of American life that are not seen in the
Hollywood films or the sitcoms that make it to Russia and are a rare
opportunity for Moscow audiences to get to see some new images of
America. . .
