For those of you thinking of flying with Aeroflot, I would like to issue a little warning.

I have been flying Aeroflot for over 15 years now and have always been a fan, especially because of the staff at Heathrow who are excellent. The caveat to this is the senior management who are soviet in mentality but fortunately do not often come down to the shop floor and bugger things up!

I flew back to Moscow last week and was horrified when I was told that my excess baggage was charged at GBP 10.00 ($20.00+) per kilo rather than the GBP 3.00 per kilo that was the charge until recently. How they justify an increase of over 230% I have no idea!

Bearing in mind that I have 30 kilos excess, I was not impressed to say the least. It should be noted that the managers that I know were kind enough to reduce the pain as I have been flying Aeroflot for so many years.

I flew Aeroflot despite the fact that BMI was cheaper and that the Domodedevo experience is excellent whereas Sheremetyevo just reminds you how bad things can be in Russia.

My recommendation these days is to fly BMI whose excess baggage cost is half that of Aeroflot combined with a great Airport, reliable travel links, relaxed immigration and friendly security. Generally speaking they have always been cheaper than Aeroflot as well and offer better service on the plane itself.... The other great thing is how quickly you are processed, with the minimum of fuss and hassle, when you fly back to Domodedevo as well!

It will be a wrench to move away from Aeroflot because of the great people I know at Heathrow, however it seems that it is a sacrifice I will have to accept.

Regards

Chris
