If you have a British driving licence, just take it (both paper and plastic parts) along with a passport photo and 4 British pounds to a main post office in the UK.
They will issue you with a (separate additional) international drivers licence that is valid for one year. It is in a number of languages including Russian and I have found it always satisfies the road police (including again this morning!!) During the soviet times there was only one official notory for this and they are located near Chisty Prudi. So, I've done just this and have had No problems.
