The site www.ziphone.org has a free download that will unlock the iPhone and allow upgrade to the latest version (1.4) in about 5 minutes. It's very easy to use.I have used it in Moscow with an MTS SIM and in the US with an AT&T pay-as-you-go SIM.
I previously had the iPhone (version 1.1) unlocked in Moscow but had problems in a few days. Ziphone cleared out the Russian hacked version and upgraded to version 1.4 in just a few minutes. The Ziphone website is very informative. According to reports, Russian's new President uses an iPhone and there are now 250,000 in Russia, even though it has not been released in the country.
