I love the fact that they spend millions in advertising themselves as the 'listening bank' & the 'worlds local bank' when they couldn't be further from the truth. I haven't tried to use my UK card recently in Russia but my HSBC Offshore seems to be working ok. I put this down to sending them a note every 3mths to advise which countries I'm likely to be in as they explained once that any transaction outside my country of residence is treated as a potential fraud. However, my US HSBC card has been blocked because I had tried to use it in a Moscow ATM. When I checked with the bank in the US I was told that most transactions were currently being blocked in Moscow due to fraud. I asked whether it was possible to mark my account to allow transactions in Moscow I was told that this was not possible. When I suggested that the fact that I was banned from access to my money might encourage me to move my banking I was simply told "I can understand why you might feel like that sir." Most helpful. Yep HSBC are fairly pro-active at blocking their cards. We get it happening to us every 3-4 weeks (for the last 4yrs!). It only takes a phone call though and the flag is lifted again. We have the fraud department on speed dial now ;) In terms of using the card here I would recommend that you upgrade to their "plus" account - as that means ATM withdrawals are free. Well worth the 11 GBP/month if you use the cards regularly. Other than that you can sign up for their CHAPS transfers which now allow you to send money online to any Russian bank (paid for but much cheaper than Western Union etc.) Best Regards Nick Wilsdon e3internet http://www.e3internet.com Skype: Nick_Wilsdon Tel: +7 4932 346314 Blog: http://nickwilsdon.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
