Dear Anna, I would highly recommend www.craigslist.org. This site is very popular in many countries, you can find anything and everything on it (sell/rent/buy etc.), and of course you can find proper accommodations in NY. Open this web page - http://newyork.craigslist.org/; under "Housing" you'll see "rent/sublet/room/apt/temporary". It always worked for me.
www.hotels.com, www.orbitz.com are also pretty good sites. Good luck.
