For financial reasons, the Russian film industry did not produce many films
until recent years, but even before the revival of the film industry some
interesting films were made for television and released on DVD, some even
with English subtitles. These days the better series are released
immediately on DVD.

There was a very good WWII spy thriller series released on DVD - Krasnaya
Kapella - with English subtitles (2004).

Azazel was a series about turn of 19th-20th century Russian detective Erast
Fandorin created by novelist Boris Akunin. There were two later very good
Fandorin films, Turetsky Gambit(2005) that is set during the Russo-Turkish
war, and Statskiy Sovietnik (2005) with Oleg Menshekov and Nikita
Mikhailkov.

The recent Master and Margarita serialization also is out on DVD - very well
done.

There are also the recent mystic thrillers Nochnoi Dozor and Dnevnoi Dozor,
both released in the west I think.

For kids, my son really likes the DVD animations Smeshariki - there must be
a dozen or so out now.
