Barry, Hi. This is George Dole. You are a brave soul. I felt like your comment when I first came here over three years ago to live full time and only having one Intro Russian course. Good news for you is that 30% of Russian comes from the pre 1917 Russian Aristocrats' love of French. Also, English and French were basically the same language around 1,000 years ago so English now still is made-up of 50% old French. You will recognize scores of Russian-English cognates you think come from English but actually come from old French, Greek, Latin and a smattering of Sanskrit. Now, don't you feel better already?
I will create a Top 10 Tourist tips list and Top 10 Most Important Common Russian words or idioms which will get you off the ground here. I am considered Intermediate Russian by a teacher for the Language Ministry but I am determined to be better sooner rather than later. Also, I will give you a 20 ruble tour of the center city Metro connections (subway for Yanks and Tube for Brits). That should get you off the ground here. Question, are coming here for a visit or full time for some foreseeable future? I will adjust my tips and phrases accordingly.
