Expats - if you are concerned about police brutality in Russia (such as the fatal beating of a kid outside of a Moscow McDonalds by three drunken cops last night), you might want to consider supporting Public Verdict, a group that provides attorneys for the victims. www.publicverdict.org. Unfortunately, the English-language part of their website is almost non-existent, and having to transfer the money via a bank makes donations a bit of a hassle. But when I've given them in the past it made me feel like I've done something. Apparently it is legal for foreigners to donate to NGOs.
A copy of transfer invoice (in Russian) can be found here, scroll down: http://www.publicverdict.org/topics/pomosh/ . Make sure to call or email them to find out the transfer code and name, otherwise the payment may bounce: [email protected] or 785-0968. There may be other groups out there tackling the same problem.
