You should have patience to learn. A large number of those Russians
who died lost their lives *because* of Russians. Countless Russians
died because of Stalin's incompetence: his wholesale slaughter of his
best generals, his refusal to accept the warnings that Hitler was
going to attack Russia, his inability to react effectively and
reasonably once the German attack did come. Then, in addition to his
deadly incompetence as a national leader, he continued to massacre
many of his own people for not conducting the war exactly as he
desired: for example, when troops were overwhelmed (which happens
easily when your troops are undertrained and underarmed) and captured,
he ordered either their imprisonment or their murder. By further
decapitating and debilitating the Russian military, the lives of the
men, women, and children that these murdered soldiers could have
defended were also lost. Indeed, some decency, humanity, and basic
good governance could have saved millions of Russian lives. The
Russian ruling forces, however, lacked all three of these.
And last, if you ever think that 300,000 lives are "marginal," in any
context, then you either (a) absolutely need to look up "marginal" in
M-W or OED or (b) are utterly heartless.

Maybe an unknown historic fact in huge letters at the Military
cemetary in / near Jerusalem which reads in Hebrew and RUSSIAN: Over
300.000 (three hundred thousand!) Jews died during WW II as active
members in the ranks of the Soviet Red Army ... Not too bad of a
"marginal contribution" to the defeat of Adolf Nazi.
A "right" sense of patriotism is certainly a good thing as long as
it it does not offend the feelings of other or "less importantant"
or "less valueable" minorities.
