My husband and I went down to Red Square last New Year. We had to pass four
security checkpoints on the way, where the militsia were stopping people and
confiscating alcohol (and presumably not letting through anyone already too
drunk, though we didn't see anyone who came into that category). Consequently
there were no empty beer bottles or dangerous drunks, just a good-natured
cheerful crowd who wanted to celebrate and watch the fireworks over St Basil's,
and maybe wave the odd sparkler about. Even going through the checkpoints
people
were in a good mood, and moved fairly quickly.

We weren't there long - too cold for us to want to do more than catch the
actual
midnight fireworks then wander home - but it was a pleasant way for us to
celebrate our first New Year in Moscow. It depends what you want. I wouldn't
describe it as a wild party atmosphere, but then we weren't looking for one.

Of course everything could be different this year...

The last time I was on Red Square on New Year's Eve was in 2002. Maybe things
have changed and residents of Russia have stopped drinking.
