Hey Adam, I'm also Aussie & have been through this process several times. Like Russia, you need an invite to get a visa for Ukraine. If you were not already located in Russia, you could get the invite through several online service providers (eg www.visatorussia.com), but these providers generally do not issue invites for people already within Russia applying at the Moscow Ukrainian Embassy.
I have a provider that I use here in Moscow for my invitations (else if you have a hotel booking in Ukraine, they should provide you an invite for free or at nominal charge), email me back directly if you need further info. After you get the invite, you simply go to the Ukranian Consulate on Leontevskiy Pereulok from Mon-Fri 9am-1pm (except Wed), fill out the forms, they make you go to a nearby bank to pay (it's not a cheap visa), and then either 3 days or ±9 days later you have your visa.
