This Friday the deluxe cruiser "Port Arthur" ("Порт Артур") will leave from the
quay outside the Expo Center (metro Vistavochnaya) at 7:30 pm and sail with a
happy bunch of (more or less) English speakers for 4 hours, returning to the
same place. The weather forecast is great and the sun stays up late. We'll
have DJ's and contests (trivia, beer drinking, etc.) and an inexpensive bar
(beer from 120 rubles, vodka from 90, similar prices for a full bar and
kitchen, too). We will cruise around the center so the views will be
excellent. Now's the time to get one of those cool new phones that has a
camera in it!
Moscow English Conversation Club has been around about 14 years, and is a very
welcoming group of people, most of whom speak English. Of course, language
proficiency isn't what a boat party is all about: non-English speakers are
welcome, they'll only have to tolerate a few short but entertaining contests in
English (and beer-drinking is kinda universal). We've been having boat parties
each summer for half a dozen years, so we're kind of good at it. This Friday,
however, we booked a nice, medium-sized boat, but a scheduling conflict led to
us being upgraded to this one. The Port Arthur has three levels: a very
Disney-style Cap'n's VIP room downstairs decorated with barrels of rum and
leather couches; a large indoor lounge with plenty of seating, big windows, a
bar, a kitchen, and a mini-cabin up front where people can comfortably watch
ahead; and up top, a large party deck partially covered with a canvas top
where, yes, smoking is allowed!
If you buy tickets in advance, the price is 800 rubles and includes a 'free'
drink (you don't pay for the drink, right, excepting as how you bought a
ticket, so it's not really free, now is it?) and entertainment. If a group of
5 or more people buy tickets together, each ticket will be discounted 100
rubles. Tickets on Friday will cost 900 rubles.
If you're new to Moscow or visiting, this is a great way to see the city and
meet friendly English speakers and annoying expats!
