It's quite simple: you just have to edit the /etc/inittab and replace
the line :
                id:3:initdefault:
by the line :       id:5:initdefault:
if you don't understand this, don't panic, there's some explanations in
the file...
and for the other question, yes, it is safe:just have a look at the
inittab file and you will see that there's a special mode for that: the
