For those who care, just noticed on the cooker list, I was not the only one with the "no authorized users logged on" message. The security protocols look promising however and another method is putting in an /etc/shutdown.allow file with authenticated user, So with 'root' in it the next step is, #shutdown -a now That works too. Defining shutdown authority in linuxconf has no effect? So how does telinit bypass the security? How to disable telinit for the "public" machines? William Bouterse
