Yes, as others have pointed out, this is a well known bug! I sufferred it until this 
list
steered me right - the only way around it is to use 32 bit colour if your h/w will do 
it,
otherwise drop back to 16 bit.

As to why some people can use 24 bit - who knows, must be some chipset/combo or 
something
- I'm using an el-cheapo m/board with a SiS 6326 video and a Voodoo 2 (12Mb Diamond
monster) 3d card. - and I can assure you, its got the bug!
