Anything in a file directory with a '.' in front of it will be hidden,
whether its a file or a directory. This is to safeguard special files
from users who don't have the savvy to be messing with them. Also,
because they are usually generated by programs for specific use by the
program they are generally of little interest to the average user. Why
clutter up their directory listings with a bunch of files they will very
seldom be interested in, and the fact they're not obvious should keep
all but the most insanely curious from looking into them.

BTW, 'ls -la' will get you all the files, without having to mention the
'.', unless of course you only want a list of what's hidden.
