what is a good kde equivalent of notepad?

i ask because when i open a pilot .pdb file in notepad (in this case my
datebook backup- don't ask) i see all the text i have ever entered as
well as gobbledygook, this is fine; but when i open the same file in
kde with the text editor i only see about 20 lines of text, a few
gobbledygook characters and nothing else even though the file is
40000+Kb

in win98 i'm used to opening files in notepad to sometimes troubleshoot
problems and i wanted to do the same in linux, i can use a hex editor to
see all of the readable info but this is less usable than notepad is
when in win98.
