You might want to start out by un-subscribing from the "expert" list and
subscribing to the "newbie" list.  I realize that you have a high degree
of *computer* expertise, and if you get too frustrated over there, feel
free to hang out here, but thse lists are really not so much *computer*
newbie/expert and *linux* (or at least Unix) newbie/expert, and I think
you will find more of the questions you are having on that list.

(Of course, subscribing to both lists is great if you can actually keep
up with both of them.  I have a hard time with the volume just on expert
myself.)

The Mandrake "User Guide and Reference Manual" is actually a very good
intro.  Read it if you haven't already done so.
