     Yes, that's "minicom".  Once you've connected to the modem, you could
issue AT commands to test it.  As a side thought, since the modem is
connected already to the computer, and minicom is launched within a terminal
(virtual or not) in the same computer, I won't describe this as "dialing to
the modem from a terminal (screen)" (sic), but I would rather say "connect to
the modem from a terminal".
