Well, from what I see in the /etc/X11/xdm/GiveConsole File:
chown $USER /dev/console
/usr/X11R6/bin/sessreg -a -w "/var/log/wtmp" -u "/var/run/utmp" \
-x "/etc/X11/xdm/Xservers" -l $DISPLAY -h "" $USER
One of these commands is not working. The GiveConsole is run as root, so
there is definitly something not correct. Let her start the script (as
root) with:
/bin/sh -x /etc/X11/xdm/GiveConsole
and look at what went wrong. You might send this to the list and we can
then help you.
