Wine is excellent, but limited. 

VMware have a non-commercial "hobbyist" version for 99 dollars 
(have a look at the online store and scroll down a bit on the "buy" 
page).

There's a cheaper product called Win4Lin 
(http://www.netraverse.com) which I've heard good things about. It 
doesn't support NT, however, which VMware does. This is probably 
what you read about on slashdot.
