Maybe because KDE has no idea what your cwd is? When you start KDE, it starts from your home directory, no? Unless you started it from a console, in which case all applications should start from the directory from which you launched kde. Or maybe not; I don't use kde but the concept should be the same for all processes why use system() or exec() to lauch applications.
