To help find the culprit, do the following:
Review dmesg after the crash for events occuring prior
to the freeze (example, network activity - ne2k can
cause freezez on some mobo's)

If you have multiple memory modules, try removing one
at a time.  If you don't, try replacing one.  (this is
the most common of freezes)

Check your IDE cables for proximity to network cards
and/or VIDEO cards.  (this solved mine, my ATA cable
was 2" from my Matrox G400 - moved it and problem
left)

Hope this helps, but do realize that freezes may not
be due to the app you happen to be running at the time
(X windows, for example).
