chances are that you click the harddisk optimization during install!
if you have that handy boot disk that the installation program asked you to 
create boot from it and edit lilo.conf

remove the words "ide2=autotune ide3=autotune" the rerun lilo.
with any luck you can now boot normally without the hpt366 crash

I have an Abit BP6 and encountered the same 
problem which never came up in 7.1.
