X also do that 'PNP detection' you talk about. If the monitor is DDC capable
(most actual monitors are) X asks the monitor its valid screen modes
(freq, res). It works since 4.0, I think.
If windows could do that, vendors would not distribute that floppys with
the monitor containing the 'monitor.inf' file...
