Hmpf. Replying to my own message with a correction. I redid my kernel, this
time with just 5x86, 6x86 as the architecture. At the end of it all, the
3c59x module and the ppa module still refused to work, as below. I then
tried something else for the hell of it. I did a "modprobe 3c90x" and it
installed. I then did an "ifup eth0" and viola! Network connectivity! My
card is a 3c900B card but up to this moment, I have had to use the 3c59x
module because 3c90x didn't work. Now things appear reversed.
So that problem is resolved and had nothing to do with Athlon vs i386 CPU
architecture. I still can't use my parallel zip drive. Anyone have a
fix/answer for that?

Against stupidity, the gods themselves contend in vain.
