Thanks Kevin
yes I was aware of that bit,I try to be a little clearer..

inetd uses /etc/services for port number to service translation, the service function
is then taken from inetd.conf.

xinetd uses /xxx/yyyyyy for port number to service translation, the service function
is then taken form the individual files in /etc/xinetd.d/

can someone help with what xxxx/yyyyyy is please.???
As changes to /etc/services don't seem to have any effect
when running xinetd.

xinetd uses /etc/xinetd.conf, and /etc/xinetd.d/*
