[expert] Continuous Message Logging

I've just changed a rather small partition, ~1 GB, form SuSE6.2 to Mandrake 
7.2.  The system continuously saves messages in several files in /var/log, 
filling up the partition and degrading performance until I delete the 
offending files.  The platform is perfectly content running other Linux 
distributions and Win95.

Thoughts and suggestions will be welcomed.
