See the steps for backing up a TiVo from the URL above. The relevant magic
is:
dd if=/dev/hdc bs=32k | gzip -9c | split -b 650m - hdcback_
which will back up the primary drive on the secondary ide port into 650MB
chuncks in the current directory starting with the filename hdcback_aa. Use
your favorite roaster to write CDRW discs.

How do you tar and gzip a partition into 650MB segments?
