No. The swap partition needs to be on a separate partition. You can,
of course, use a swap file on the same partition as root (or somewhere
else). But doing that is not as good as having a real swap partition, 
because of the extra overhead of going through the filesystem to access
the swap data.

FreeBSD does things differently. I really don't have experience with
FreeBSD - but I remember playing with its ancestor 386BSD many years
ago. That install had a fixed swap size (inside the root partition) of
only 5 megs.
