Hi everyone. Sorry if this is the wrong list to post to, I did a few searches through the archives and it seemed like this would be the right place. If I'm wrong let me know. I've been fighting with having my 12/10/32a Plextor Plexwriter (IDE) actually read cdrom's under mandrake 8.0. (Actually, I've had problems with any 2.4 kernel distro, with the exception of slackware. I can install say the old redhat and my plexwriter works fine, and as soon as I put in a 2.4 kernel it stops). But, back to the mandrake situation. I only have the burner in my system, no other drives. I install using the mandrake cd in that cdrom, and it installs fine, but when mandrake comes up after being installed I can't use the cdrom anymore. I've posted this as a question on mandrakeexpert.com but can't get it working, so this maliing list is my last resort. Here is what I posted on mandrakeexpert.com: CD-ROM doesn`t work. I have three HD`s and one CD-ROM on a Asus CUSl2. The cd-rom is a Plexwriter 12/10/32A, IDE. I booted and installed off this cdrom. When Mandrake loads, it cannot access the cdrom. In a terminal if I try to cd to /mnt/cdrom it says there is an I/O error. In the hardware part of the control center it says I have two cdroms, one on /dev/hdc that is ATAPI/IDE and one on /dev/scd0 that is SCSI. And I've received a few replies and tried what was suggested, nothing seemed to work. In the interest of brievety, here are the latest symptoms: [root@terapro33-244 ide-scsi]# modprobe ide-scsi ; modprobe sr_mod [root@terapro33-244 ide-scsi]# cd /mnt/cdrom bash: cd: /mnt/cdrom: Input/output error [root@terapro33-244 /root]# cd /proc/ide/ide1/ [root@terapro33-244 hdc]# ls -l total 0 -r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 May 3 23:07 capacity -r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 May 3 23:07 driver -r-------- 1 root root 0 May 3 23:07 identify -r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 May 3 23:07 media -r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 May 3 23:07 model -rw------- 1 root root 0 May 3 23:07 settings [root@terapro33-244 hdc]# cd /proc/scsi [root@terapro33-244 scsi]# ls -l total 0 dr-xr-xr-x 2 root root 0 May 3 23:11 ide-scsi/ -r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 May 3 23:11 scsi [root@terapro33-244 scsi]# cd ide-scsi/ [root@terapro33-244 ide-scsi]# ls -l total 0 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 May 3 23:08 0 ANY help at all on this would be very helpful.. I've been a hardcore slackware user since 2.x but I'm really liking this mandrake and I've made burns of every 8.0 beta, hoping that my cdrom would work with the final release, but to no avail. Thanks!
