If you will not log into the desktop, you will need to ask someone (and we 
are, after all, here to help).  If you are willing to use the desktop to get 
the information you can right click (in KDE) the icon, choose "Properties" 
and from that dialog choose the "Execute" tab; the name of the program will 
appear.  If you have the desktop, but don't use it you can [cat|view|emacs] 
$HOME/Desktop/<"Useful Program">.desktop and look for the line that begins 
"Exec=".
