If anybody is interested (and didn't know), switching to gdm didn't fix the
mouse problem, or the xscreensaver problem. And, when my enlightenment
session came up, it had the gnome stuff layered on top of it (interestingly,
I discovered enlightenment byt stripping gnome off of it).
