hi, i have just upgraded my system to include a compaq smart-2/p array
controller instead of a adaptec 2940 and am getting a strange problem with
file copys from an ide cdrom to the array. whenever i do this my pc is
almost totaly dead to the world until the operation is completed. ie kde is
frozen i can altf1-6 to get a console but cant log on until the file copy is
over. other than that all appears to be running ok.

so far i have tried

1) controller and drives have been fitted to proliant 1200 and compaq diags
run overnight with no errors found.
2) when i installed freebsd 4.3 on the 12gb stripe the problem did not
occure.
3) reinstalled allowing mandrake to make the choices instead of using expert
4) archive & web search for info, there is some but all i've come across (so
far) is for older 2.0.? & 2.2.? kernals
5) disabled all unnecessary services
6) tried an ide to ide transfer this was ok.
7) removed all other cards from pc
8) logs show nothing
9) array controller tried in different slots

pc config

i have set the array to raid 0 & left the cache to 50% read 50% write. there
is one 12gb stripe (reiser) across the 3 drives with win98 sitting on the
remainder of the 9gb drive.

os version is mandrake 8.0 no changes have been made to stock kernel
