" Small number of VIA 686 boxes randomly jump from 100Hz back to the DOS 18Hz > timeout. We dont know if its hardware or maybe APM bios bugs. The kernel puts > the timer back and life appears happy again " And "TO ALL KA7 OWNERS: There is probably some sort of bug in the via vt82c686a, or in some motherboards that use this device. The programmable timer appears to get corrupted. If you want to review the discussion that took place on linux-kernel, search your favorite mailing list archive for "Possible critical VIA vt82c686a chip"." This also happens with other chipsets, notably the ALiMagik as well. The programmable timer produces erroneous results. This is not a Linux problem per-se. It also appears in Winblows. On my Asus A7A266 motherboards, when I dual boot into WinBlows the Asus Probe utility manifests this problem as a marked "spike" in the values of any logging window. The erroneous clock throws off the probe software producing the spike. -JMS [EMAIL PROTECTED] |-----Original Message----- |From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf |Of Bill Thompson |Sent: Sunday, September 02, 2001 5:03 AM |To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] |Subject: Re: [expert] Clock timer configuration lost. | | |DataChannel wrote: |> |> What does it mean when "probable hardware bug: clock timer |> configuration lost - probably a VIA686a motherboard." |scrolls up in my |> logs at random intervals between once every 10 seconds to once every |> 45 minutes on a |> |> motherboard (GA-5AX) that doesn't have a VIA chipset on a fresh |> installation of Mandrake Linux 8.0? | | I've been seeing this message for a coupla months and have |not come up | with an answer.
