Do you know what file system you have?

If it's ext2, use:

e2fsck -f <device>

The "-f" makes sure it runs the check. Sometimes the fsck program thinks
the file system is clean on first check when it is not.

For a ReiserFS partition, use:

reiserfsck <device>

Best of luck!
