I hate to tell you this, but Mandrake 8.1 has a tendency to have trouble with the 
ES1371. At least I had a terrible time with that card on my 8.1 machine. the best i 
could do with it was intermittent service.

the one thing i noticed it was having trouble with was exactly what you're describing 
only in my case it turned out to be a permission problem. i don't know if thats what 
your case is. check the ownership of /tmp/mcop-$USERNAME. it should be owned by you. 
in my case it was still owned by root and this was causing me to have to redo the 
install of the card from Mandrake Control Center everytime I would boot the work 
station to get sound to work.
