What version of Mandrake are you using?  I have this problem with 8.0 but not 
7.2 (and not SuSE 7.3)  My solution is to switch to a non graphical console 
before using the switch (i.e. Ctrl-Alt-F1).  Then whenI switch back to 
Mandrake I hit enter and then switch back to X (i.e. Ctrl-Alt-F7).  Is this a 
USB switch?
