no I just copied the manually built smbd over the old one (from the Mandrake
rpm) in /usr/sbin

Hey Tom,

Thanks for answering your own post. It really helps when we can see the 
solution to a problem. In particular, it is good to know that the 
provided mandrake samba rpm does not have acl options compiled into it. 
I now know, if I need this option, it is time to start from souce. BTW 
did you "rpm -e" the original samba version?
